Age or Beauty I: Hokkaido barns
Gum printing is chosen for the "Age or Beauty" series because its texture, and that of the watercolour paper it is
printed on, echo the texture of the subject matter. Each print is unique.
The Hokkaido barns typically have a similar lifespan to their owners - the two often live and
die together. As the owners age they become unable to maintain the buildings, and the buildings are demolished.
Modern buildings are mass produced, efficient but characterless compared to the individual hand made barns
that they eventually replace.
